Rapsodo: An Outstanding And Affordable Portable Launch Monitor

I cover golf, luxury technology, and the intersection of the two.

The first time I ever saw my golf swing data on a launch monitor shocked me. My clubhead speed was about 8 miles per hour slower than my playing partners', while my driver distance was a good 10 yards shorter than I imagined. As it turns out, that humbling experience is common. Many golfers think they're much better than they actually are. That was years ago. Technology has improved by great strides and become deadly accurate and completely portable.

Rapsodo's Mobile Launch Monitor ($499) is one of those products. It's well built, maybe the size of two decks of cards side by side, and weighs next to nothing. And I know it's reliable because of two reasons. First, the people behind it came from some of golf's top equipment manufacturers. And also, the company's similar products for baseball are used by many Major League Baseball teams — for their batters and pitchers. In other words, it's state-of-the-art equipment.
For golf, this is straightforward to use. You pull it out of the included carrying pouch, make sure it's charged up and powered on, and download the iPhone app (no it doesn't work on Android yet, but that's coming soon). From there, you sync the app with the device and calibrate your iPhone's front camera (only the first time you use it). That includes placing the phone at five spots around the Mobile Launch Monitor and waiting to be prompted. Once complete, put the monitor eight feet behind you with the phone propped up into the provided slot, and then swing away.

On the app, you will see precisely accurate data about your total distance, carry distance, Smash Factor, ball velocity, launch angle, clubhead speed, launch direction, shot shaping and more. This knowledge will let you work on what matters in improving your game, such as club distance gapping, shot shaping and course management. With your phone perched up on the physical device, it sets up your camera at an angle to take video of your swing so you can easily review your shots and watch the active flight tracer instantly after every swing. Thanks to its GPS mapping capabilities, it also shows your shot scatter on the range or course, as well. From there, you can select any shot and see your swing stats or video for that particular shot.
One caution: This product must be used outdoors and without a hitting net. That's why it's a perfect companion to take to the driving range with you where it can transform a typical bucket of balls into a much more meaningful and useful practice session. Or you can take it on-course.
Honestly this device is more advanced than some products 10 times its cost were just a few years ago. There are several products on the market that gather this kind of data, but what impresses me with the Rapsodo is how seamless and easy it is to use. I was up and running within 10 or 15 minutes, when trying it for the first time right out of the box. The data it provides well exceeded my expectations. Unfortunately, my clubhead speed is again disappointing all these years later. As is my shot distance. But at least now I know how to use that information to my advantage in lowering my scores.
